V.A. - Stora Popboxen (3 CD-Set)

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008
Not my rip but a pretty good overview of the swedish '60s scene. On this 3 CD-Set (EMI 724347515729 / 1996) you will find all kinds of heights (and all kinds of low). 20% good, 30% OK and 50% uninteresting/boring stuff to my ears. If you already have the fantastic "Searching For Shakes" and the promisng "Who Will Buy Those Wonderful Evils" compilations than you probably don't need this one (although the pop tunes on disc 3 may interest some).

The Gants - I Wonder (1965-67)

Monday, August 18th, 2008
This Greenwood/Massachusetts band was best known for their classic Beatlesque "I Wonder" which was compiled a few times but strangely never released as a 7-inch. This collection of their best songs was released by BamCaruso (BamCaruso KIRI 067 / 1988) and contains some cool garage sounds as well as their later orchestrated pop songs "Greener Days", "Drifter's Sunrise" and "Just A Good Show".

Tracklist:
- I Wonder
- You Better Run
- Spoonful Of Sugar
- Six Days In May
- My Baby Don't Care
- Never Go Right
- I Don't Want To See Her Again
- Somebody Please
- Drifter's Sunrise
- Kicks
- Try Too Hard
- Good Lovin'
- Crackin' Up
- Dance Last Night
- I Want Your Lovin'
- Hungry
- Greener Days
- Just A Good Show

Marmalade - Kaleidoscope (1966-70)

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008
The Marmalade (formerly Dean Ford & The Gaylords) were a band I have never paid much interest to. They were responsible for the cover of the dull "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", which gave them their only number 1 hit. To be honest it was the only song I have heard by them. In 1999 Tenth Planet released a collection of 15 tracks entitled "Kaleidoscope [An Alternate History Of The Marmalade]" (Tenth Planet TP044) and I gave The Marmalade a second try. It was a good decision 'cause songs like "I See The Rain", "Laughing Man" or "Man In A Shop" are Psych-Pop/Freakbeat masterpieces. There are also a few weaker tracks like "Chains", "Mr. Tambourine Man" or "And Yours Is A Piece Of Mine" (plus the uninteresting Bee Gees cover "Butterfly") but the rest of the set is pretty strong, most notably the eastern-influenced "Kaleidoscope".

Tracklist:
- I See The Rain
- There Ain't No Use In Hangin' On
- It's All Leading Up To Saturday Night
- Chains
- Hey Joe
- Butterfly
- Laughing Man
- Kaleidoscope
- Mr. Lion
- Man In A Shop
- Mr. Tambourine Man
- And Yours Is A Peace Of Mind
- Mess Around

La-De-Da’s - How Is The Air Up There? (1966-67)

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
This Auckland band's debut album was one of the best Garage/R&B/Mod efforts that came out of New Zealand. On their follow up "Find Us A Way" they veered towards to a more but less interesting Mod/Soul style. They continued to release further albums till the '70s. This CD (Ascension ANCD018 / 2000) contains the cool first album (with their fantastic version of "How Is The Air Up There?"), some tracks from the aforementioned second release and all their 45's from 1966-67, most notably the great garage punker "Don't You Stand In My Way". There's also an other compilation around. You can find it on the Pessimist Club blogspot.

Tracklist:
- On Top Of The World
- How Is The Air Up There?
- Little Red Book
- Jump Back
- Bright Lights, Big City
- I Put A Spell On You
- What Ya Gonna Do About It
- Land Of A Thousand Dances
- I Take What I Want
- Shake
- Parchman Farm
- The Pied Piper
- I've Got My Mojo Working
- Ride Your Pony

[Bonus Tracks]
- Find Us A Way
- All Purpose Low
- Too Many Fish In The Sea
- Rosalie
- Tell The Truth
- Gimme Some Lovin'
- Cool Jerk
- Thank You For The Flowers
- Don't You Stand In My Way
